The Effect of Fear
"Cry, the beloved country, for the unborn child that is the inheritor of our fear. Let him not love the earth too deeply. Let him not laugh too gladly when the water runs through his fingers, nor stand too silent when the setting sun makes red the veld with fire. Let him not be too moved when the birds of his land are singing, nor give too much of his heart to a mountain or a valley. For fear will rob him of all if he gives too much." ~ Cry, The Beloved Country (111)
There is a problem with society.
Every generation is brought into a world they have little control over. They
are given the problems that each of the previous generations have caused. They
are also given the hatred and fear of the previous generation. It’s hard to
stop this chain because most people don’t realize that they have any problems because
it’s been that way their entire life.

"Inaction breeds doubt and fear. Action breeds confidence and courage. If you want to conquer fear, do not sit home and think about it. Go out and get busy." ~Dale Carnegie | The quote above tells us that we cannot give too much of ourselves to anything because we will lose everything if we do. While this can be true, it keeps us from growth and improvement. Telling us not to try something just because we might be harmed will keep us from accomplishing anything. As I've heard so many times in Financial Literacy, a greater risk results in a greater reward.
| “When a resolute young fellow steps up to the great bully, the world, and takes him boldly by the beard, he is often surprised to find it comes off in his hand, and that it was only tied on to scare away the timid adventurers.” ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson |
And just what might one get from giving one’s self to a particular cause? Alone, they probably will not accomplish much, which brings us back to our original problem. The reason most people are alone when they fight for what they believe in is that most people do not see any problems with the world. Sure, a lot of people hear about problems throughout the world, but they fail to realize to what extent these problems are, and how those problems can affect them. However, there is a solution to this problem. We must educate each other. Any misconceptions or lies that we have “inherited” from others can be dispelled with the truth. When we learn what is really going on in the world, and what other people really are like, we will forget what we thought we knew, and be able to end the awful chain of problems.
